| Welcome | Oct 12, 2006 |
Music performed by the following acoustic & electric bass players: I've been lucky enough to have known & listened to Tom for over 30 years. Dave only for maybe 20 something. I only heard about this disk because Dave passed away recently, under very sad circumstances. I went to a memorial service for him at the Vermont Jazz Center, where I saw many old friends, heard many retell their Dave stories and remembrances, and met Steve for the first time. I had emailed him about the CD and he had some there. I will post this also to the bass group. Tom arranged all but two of these, Johnny Come Lately & Fables of Faubus, which were arranged by Tim Atherton. Other than Steve and Marc, I had heard all the other players in one group or venue over many years, and yet had never heard of this gig or the recording it produced. The piano is particularly good. But listen to the bass, Dave was a Brooklyn boy, a music/bass teacher, a fun lover, a real nice guy to know, but a hell of a bass player. He's gone but his recordings live on.

http://ericvangogh.multiply.com/music/item/1997/DOUBLE_BASS_MUSIC The independent release "Trash", is described by Mark King as a selection of songs that were "never finished or used". Mark was asked why he chose to release an album like this.
Mark: Having shelves full of odds and sods of music from the past twenty years led me to post a message on the websites offering any hard and fast fans out there a chance to hear some of the things that were never going to see the light of day otherwise. | Just Like That | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Outstanding | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Throwing Sevens | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Keep Climbing | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Don't Say I Don't | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Song For Ria | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Stronger | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Sooner Or Later | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Smile | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Clapped Out | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Hells Bells | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King | | | Bossa Nostra | | Trash | | Level 42's Mark King
Following the 1994 Level 42 split Mark took the whole of 1995 off and took some time to just enjoy being a family man back at home on the Isle of Wight. Shortly afterward he sold his archetypal rock-star mansion with built-in studio and the family moved to a smaller home on the island. About this time Mark began to consider a new direction for his career.
Mark: Well I was looking for some kind of role in the music industry. What do you do? I write songs amongst other things, so I thought I might try writing songs for some artists I admired. I never had the balls to approach them with the material I came up with and it started to mount up! Then I got a call from Warner Chappell’s (publisher) and they listened to the stuff I was doing and introduced me to Eagle Records.
The Eagle people liked what they heard and they soon signed up Mark for a solo album. ‘One Man’ was actually Mark's second solo album, having released ‘Influences’ way back in 1984. Sad to say that the press and the record buying public reacted with what Mark describes as “Stunning indifference!” to both the album and it's single release ‘Bitter Moon’.
Mark: ‘I never seem to have learned the lesson that what had got me anywhere in the first place was a complete belief in my own ability’, Mark mused. ‘The moment you invite anyone else to choose your path you are compromised - and, of course, that's your own fault!’ | 01 Bitter Moon | | | | | | | 02 Swimming With Sky | | | | | | | 03 One Man | | | | | | | 04 Half Written Songs | | | | | | | 05 Pamela | | | | | | | 06 Take My Hand | | | | | | | 07 Love Wars | | | | | | | 08 Resupply | | | | | | | 09 If I Had Something | | | | | | | 10 Changing the Guard
